In this section:
Our aim in Year 2 is to not only challenge and inspire the children but to develop their love of learning, to support them in becoming more independent in their school life and gain the necessary skills for a smooth transition into Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6).
During the year, the children will become more confident with speaking and listening to others and develop their knowledge and understanding of how to improve their own learning.
Learning to read and developing a love of reading is at the heart of Year 2.
The children are immersed in books through regular book talk sessions, having books read to them, accessing high quality and well-matched books from the well-stocked classroom book corner and borrowing books from the school library.
All children will also be able to borrow a book from the library to further their reading for pleasure.
Children experience a wide range of learning opportunities in Year 2, they explore the curriculum in a variety of inspiring ways. Highlights of the year include our ‘Our World’ and ‘Gunpowder Plot topics.
The significant highlight of the year is the residential to Beaumanor Hall, a residential activity centre in Woodhouse Eaves, for 2 nights in the Spring Term.
The children take part in various activities such as den building, outdoor crafts, team games and exploring minibeasts and generally enjoying the outdoors.
For many of our Year 2 children, this marks their first time away from home. This opportunity allows the children to grow in confidence and independence.
