Welcome to Year 1
We understand the importance of a smooth and enjoyable transition from EYFS into Year 1.
We guide and support each child through this journey to embed their sense of belonging in Key Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2), as well as develop their independence and resilience.
In Year 1, we prepare the children for their school life and beyond by making them enthusiastic learners, along with finding their passion and strengths in all areas of the curriculum.
Learning to read and developing a love for reading is at the heart of Year 1. We are determined that all children will learn to read fluently as a result of making the very best start with their reading through high quality phonics teaching and an immersion into books and stories.
The children are immersed in books through regular book talk sessions, having books read to them, accessing high quality and well-matched books from a well-stocked classroom book corner and borrowing books from the school library.
The children look forward to our amazing Geography and History topics. They use their geographic skills as they explore Whitwick and develop their history skills through studying significant historical events, people and places in their own locality. They become expert scientists as they investigate plants and seasonal changes.
These interesting experiences help the children make the step from the early years setting to the national curriculum seamlessly.
