In this section:
The children are now the top of the school; secondary school is fast approaching.
The Year 6 children begin the year with a team bonding residential visit to Min-Y-Don in Arthog, Wales.
Our intent for the children in Year 6 is to take full responsibility for their school life in preparation for their transition to secondary school.
Our Year 6 pupils lead the school in many ways.
They fulfil a wide range of roles across the school such as:
- School Librarians,
- House Captains,
- Leading our younger children in sporting activities,
- Playground Pal,
- Reading Pal,
- Representing the school in a wide range of musical, sporting and cultural events.
Reading for pleasure is at the heart of Year 6.
The children are immersed in books through regular book talk sessions, accessing high quality and well-matched books from the school’s library system and a well-stocked classroom book corner.
Alongside all of the core curriculum areas, the children experience a varied, rich and fulfilling range of learning opportunities.
They enjoy a whole range of History and Geography topics including learning about Victorian life in Whitwick and beyond to understanding Mayan civilisation. They explore ‘Where would I rather live?’ in Geography and compare and contrast different locations including Whitwick, Arthog (Wales) and Tulum (Mexico).
We encourage independence in managing their time, school duties and home learning. Through all of this hard work, we find that our children are more than ready to move on with confidence and resilience to their next school.
