Aims

- To develop children’s ability within an integrated programme of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing,

- To fully embed English skills into a broad and balanced curriculum where children have the opportunities to apply their learning in a range of purposeful contexts,

- To develop children’s ability to communicate freely, effectively and imaginatively in spoken and written English,

- To deliver the statutory National English Curriculum 2014 in a fun and engaging way which inspires all children from whatever background and of whatever ability,

- To provide children with the necessary skills to become competent, creative and efficient users of the English Language to prepare them for secondary school and to enable them to become successful in their later lives,

- To develop a love of reading so that pupils read for pleasure.

Subject Leader

Mrs Sutherland

Mrs Sutherland ensures that all the aspects of the English National Curriculum content are identified and taught. Mrs Sutherland reviews the knowledge progression maps and medium term plans for English to ensure that pupils’ learning becomes increasingly more challenging as they move through the year groups, and to maintain an overview of standards within the subject.

Mrs Sutherland also produces an annual action plan for English; supports the writing of medium-term plans; analyses the standards within English; provides or signposts staff towards training and resources; and engages in developmental work and research projects with external colleagues.
